It Begins with Design

Like all my projects, we started designing in a program I love to use called SketchUp. For 6 weeks we went back and forth dialing in the details of the design and finally landed on our favorite one. This desk was massive,  measuring 8ft wide and 3ft deep. It was time to get to work!

We both were really big fans of sun tanned poplar for the wood choice. Not only is it cost effective, but when done correctly it’s so beautiful. Julian is also a modern day man, having this desk at one level was just not an option. We decided that this entire desk was going to be a Sit/Stand workspace. With a 2″ thick main desk and music equipment rack on top we needed to find some serious legs to handle the weight.

Julian, being the friend that he is, joined me for several of the work days and together the project went from a computer design to a tangible piece of furniture right before our eyes. Highlights of the build include breadboard ends, hidden pull out shelves, a full 88 key pull out keyboard tray, and of course the 7 degree slanted equipment racks on top. This piece is number 1 in my heart!

Recording Studio Desk

One of my best friends, Julian, is an independent music producer here in Los Angeles. A few years ago he and his now amazing wifey, Christina, moved into a home and started working on their home music studio. They took their detached garage and transformed it into a music making dojo. Once the stage was set it was time to get to work on the main feature of the studio, a desk fit for a king.
